Why Doesn’t My Garage Door Work Anymore? Featured

Jun 30 2020

There’s no doubt that garage doors can be about as painful to troubleshoot as a computer. Luckily, the experts here at Wagner Door Co., LLC have some advice to offer for when opening your garage door goes awry.

1. Dead Garage Door Opener Batteries

This seems obvious to us, but garage door transmitters require a source of power to work! As you may have guessed, dead batteries in your transmitter means your transmitter won’t open the garage door anymore. You can check to see if the problem is your transmitter by testing the one on the wall inside your garage. If that one works, chances are the one in your car just needs some new batteries.

2. The Photo Eye Safety Mechanism Isn’t Properly Aligned

Unless your garage door was installed prior to 1993, it’s entirely likely that there’s a little box on either side of the entrance. These boxes contain “photo eyes” that constantly send an invisible beam back and forth to one another to detect the presence of any animal or object that may prevent the door from closing. If the beam is tripped by anything, the door will immediately stop closing before any serious property damage or injury occurs.

Unfortunately, these photo eyes frequently collect dirt or get knocked around a bit, causing the beam to be blocked or the eyes to come out of alignment with each other. That makes your garage door think there’s something in the way, so it should stay put. Try cleaning debris away from the eyes at first, then check to make sure they’re aligned. If you need help with this, just call the pros at 636.332.8984 and we’ll give you a hand or send an experienced technician out to handle it.

3. Your Track Has Come Out of Alignment

Hopefully, this isn’t causing the problems you’re experiencing. Misalignment on your garage door track can be a serious issue. If your door can’t easily glide along both sides of the track, it will jam up and stop working properly. Over time, this is can cause damage to your opener and your garage door. Since these problems have the potential to be dangerous, we always recommend calling a trained professional to assess the situation and make the necessary repairs.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues and our troubleshooting steps didn’t clear it up, don’t hesitate to call.
